Where Shall We Go This Year?
CHARLOTTE MASON VOLUME 5 : Formation Of Character: CHAPTER 2, PART 2
Sometimes, we feel the need for a change, envisioning waking up in a place far away with different air and climate. In the past, it wasn't uncommon for doctors to recommend some country air. Indeed, sometimes all we need is fresh air for the lungs and a change of environment.
However, travel isn’t always possible, and we shouldn't waste our days longing for what is beyond reach while ignoring what we already have. Often, there are many overlooked experiences around us that tourists stumble upon before we do.
Every village, town, or city we reside in holds within it a wealth of stories – from its history and folk songs to its flora and geography, both past and present. Old maps are storehouses of countless tales. If we choose to explore our entire county, we'll notice more during our walks – the remnants of history, and the diversity of flora and fauna. Moreover, delving deeply into our immediate environment will help us recognise the authors and poets of our land, both past and present.
By sharing all of this with our children, we instil in them a deep appreciation for their immediate surroundings. The best part is that we'll learn to be deeply appreciative of our travel experiences because we've learned to appreciate what matters most – home.
Best Regards,
