Success isn’t for the Special
CHARLOTTE MASON VOLUME 5 :CHAPTER 3 - PART II A
Every person is full of potential and endless possibilities. However, it’s not the potential that makes us successful, it’s our commitment to personal development.
Let’s think about our children for a minute. One of the best ways to develop character is through great responsibility. Our children should see that their contribution to the family is important. Moreover, we are obliged to teach them the methods and principles of personal development. They should be taught about the power of habit in achieving great things.
We should be present and interested enough to model and teach our values.
This approach goes beyond mere commands and instructions. We must teach the principles guiding our choices. Our kids should be encouraged to cultivate a positive personal philosophy and learn decision-making skills.
If we make all our children’s decisions for them, they miss out on practicing decision-making. When our children do meaningful work alongside us or other adults, they become more cognitively mature.
We must remember our children are still learning. They won’t always recall the values we teach. Sometimes, they’ll lie because they are too impatient to listen to their conscience. Let’s be gentle, offering grace while fulfilling our duty.
