I Can, I Ought, I Will
Ourselves, Charlotte Mason Volume 4 (Book 1––Self-Knowledge); Chapter 3- The Government of Mansoul
Surely, goodness, greatness, heroism, wisdom, and knowledge lie within the realm of possibility for every child. Each of us is a kingdom of Mansoul, full of potential. We cannot adequately predict the connections that can be made in the mind of little child. We don’t even yet know our full capabilities. Who knows? I might even be fluent in French by next April.
Yet without self-governance, these possibilities remain untapped. This means doing what we know is right, even when we don’t feel like it. Just as a washing machine’s intake valve regulates water, we must curb unruly appetites. We have the power to direct our desires. After all, no matter how much a washing machine craves coffee instead of detergent, we give it detergent. Our spin cycle, or imagination, can churn ideas vigorously. We are drawn to beauty. We possess logic, conscience, and a will. We are capable if permit ourselves to be. Our children are capable.
So here is the question: With all we and our children are born with, have we nurtured these gifts, or neglected them?
